1. General information
This subject deepens the knowledge of the short and long narrative of Spanish and Latin American literature from the late twentieth century to the twenty-first century. For this purpose, a vision based on thematic and generic criteria of the production of short and long narratives will be provided, attending to its diverse modalities, topoi and expressive resources. The study will always be supported by texts, fragments and complete works, of compulsory reading that the student must be able to understand and interpret.
It is part of the Optional Module of Specific Training of the Degree in Hispanic Philology, taught in the 3rd or 4th year.

An advanced instrumental command of Spanish is required. Non-native students must have at least a B2 level of Spanish.
2. Learning results
-To know the characteristics and evolution of narrative forms through their manifestations in Hispanic literature.
-To analyse the themes and forms of Hispanic narrative, taking into account their modes of dissemination and reception.
-To identify narrative forms in their differences and connections with other forms of prose.

1. The modernist novel. José Asunción Silva, De sobremesa.
2. A short detective novel: Emilia Pardo Bazán, La gota de sangre.
3. A "perfect novel": Adolfo Bioy Casares, The Invention of Morel.
4. The "disturbing strangeness": Felisberto Hernández, Las Hortensias.
5. The new fantastic ones: Samantha Schweblin, Mariana Enriquez, Agustina Bazterrica.
6. Autobiography and autofiction: Todas las almas, by Javier Marías.

We will work with written materials and audiovisual media. Theoretical and practical presentations will be combined. Theoretical contents will be presented and complete works as well as a selection of other texts will be analysed. An active involvement of the student is expected , through activities that favour motivation, critical thinking and debate.

5. Assessment system
First call
a) Continuous assessment (possible, if group with less than 25 students)
- A theoretical-practical test based on questions on the syllabus and readings (50%). To be held at the end of the teaching period.
- Practical tests based on the program readings (50%). The nature , formal characteristics and date of the event will be announced sufficiently in advance.
b) Global assessment test (on the date established in the academic calendar)
1. Written test: questions on the syllabus and readings. Weighting: 100 % of the qualification.
Aspects common to both modalities:
Criteria: understanding of theoretical concepts and knowledge of compulsory and complementary readings, clarity and expressive correctness.
The minimum grade for averaging in each of the tests taken will be 4 (out of 10).
